MICHAEL KANAN TRIO
Featuring Greg Ruggiero & Neal Miner
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 21
9.00 PM PARIS / 8.00 PM LON / 3.00 PM NY / 12.00PM LA
TICKET PRICE €10.00 / £10.00 / $13.00
Michael Kanan - piano - Greg Ruggiero - guitar Neal Miner - bass
The Michael Kanan Trio, featuring guitarist Greg Ruggiero and bassist Neal Miner has been delighting audiences in New York for the past 5 years. The group exhibits a rare level of intuitive communication and camaraderie between three musicians committed to swing. In Miner and Ruggiero, Kanan has found kindred spirits who share his affection for and commitment to the American songbook as a wellspring of inspiration for jazz improvisation. The group sound is joyful, lyrical, and grows out of a natural rapport. As a piano/guitar/bass trio, it would be impossible not to be influenced by the father of the genre, the King Cole Trio.” Kanan says. “However, we didn’t come together to try to recreate his style or format. I chose Greg and Neal solely based on musical chemistry. Neal and I have a 28-year history of playing together, and he was a huge influence on my development. And Greg was the perfect element to complete the trio. If he played any other instrument he still would have been part of the trio because of his conception, sound, and our shared understanding of music.”
Kanan says he loves the trio format because of its intimacy and conversational qualities. “Having guitar instead of drums opens up many melodic and textural possibilities. Greg and I have spoken at length about how to blend our sounds and to avoid the usual guitar/piano conflicts. In this trio we try to take advantage of all the possibilities of having three instruments that both accompany and solo. In general, we avoid the usual pattern of melody-solo-melody in favor of more interesting ways to interact over the course of a song. Any one of us might have the leading voice at any given moment. But underneath it all remains our love of the swing beat.”
The trio’s latest recording, In This Moment (Gut String Records GSR042) is the clearest, most mature statement of Kanan’s career to date. It captures the trio in a live performance at New York’s prestigious listening room, Mezzrow. As he wrote in the liner notes, “I hear us trusting each other on this recording. For this Mezzrow recording we had chosen which originals we would play. Other than that, we left it up to instinct and rapport… We were aiming for honesty, communication and love. That night I think we found them.”
“Michael Kanan is one of my teachers. It’s lovely to hear his pure, unforced pianism in this kind of casual but sincere setting.” - Ethan Iverson
